How does card counting work in blackjack?

Blackjack card counting is a method of estimating the balance of high and low cards left in the shoe. A player assigns simple values to the cards already dealt and keeps a running total. That total can indicate when the undealt cards contain a larger proportion of 10s and aces, or a larger proportion of small cards.

Counting cards in blackjack does not reveal the next card, record the order of the shoe or guarantee a winning hand. It provides an estimate based on cards that have already appeared. The method only carries useful information while dealt cards remain out of play. Once the shoe is shuffled, the count returns to zero.

What does a blackjack card counter actually track?

A blackjack card counter tracks card groups rather than trying to memorise every suit and rank. Low cards are usually treated as helpful to the dealer. They let the dealer draw towards 17 without going bust as often. High cards can improve the player's expected position because they create more natural blackjacks and strengthen some double-down opportunities.

That does not mean every high card helps the player or every low card helps the dealer. A dealer can also receive a blackjack, and any hand can lose when the count is positive. Card counting deals with the expected result across many hands, not a prediction for one deal.

The count also has no value on its own. Table rules still matter, including deck count, the blackjack payout, the dealer's soft 17 rule and how much of the shoe is dealt before a shuffle. A favourable count at a poor table may still leave the house with an advantage.

How does the Hi-Lo card counting system work?

Hi-Lo is a common card-counting blackjack system because it gives each card one of three simple values.

The running count starts at zero after a shuffle. Add or subtract the relevant value as every visible card appears, including cards dealt to other players and the dealer.

Suppose the visible cards are 5, king, 8, 3, ace and 6. The running count changes in this order.

The final running count is +1. More low cards than high cards have appeared in this short sequence, so the unseen cards may contain a slightly higher proportion of high cards. Six cards are far too small a sample to support a meaningful conclusion, but the example shows how the arithmetic works.

What is the difference between a running count and a true count?

The running count is the total produced by the cards already dealt. In a game using several decks, it needs to be adjusted for the estimated number of decks still in the shoe. This adjusted figure is called the true count.

The calculation is simple.

True count = running count ÷ estimated decks remaining

A running count of +6 with three decks left produces a true count of +2. The same +6 with one deck left produces +6. The second situation has a much stronger concentration because the imbalance is spread across fewer unseen cards.

Deck estimation makes counting harder in practice. The number of cards remaining is not printed beside the table, so the player has to judge it while continuing to make normal hand decisions. A mistake in either figure can make the true count misleading.

What does the count change during a blackjack game?

Card counting does not replace basic blackjack strategy. The normal decision still begins with your cards, the dealer's visible card and the rules in use. A count can alter the expected value of certain bets and a small number of close playing decisions, but it does not turn every hand into a new calculation.

A positive true count suggests that more 10-value cards and aces remain than usual. In theory, a skilled counter may place larger wagers as the true count rises and smaller wagers when it is neutral or negative. This is where much of the potential value comes from, but it also creates larger financial swings. A positive count can be followed by several losing hands.

Insurance is one decision that depends directly on the proportion of 10-value cards left in the shoe. A sufficiently high count can make the separate insurance wager less unfavourable or occasionally favourable under a specific system. The required point varies with the counting method and table rules, so a fixed number should not be applied to every game.

Some hit, stand, split and double decisions can also change at particular true counts. These are known as strategy deviations. They are separate from learning the count itself and require a chart built for the exact rules. Using memorised deviations with the wrong deck count or dealer rule can produce the wrong move.

Where does card counting stop being useful?

Card counting loses its value when previous cards provide little or no information about the next round. The shuffle method, amount of the shoe dealt and pace of play all affect how much information a player can retain and use.

Can you count cards in online blackjack?

It depends on how the online game deals and replaces its cards. Many digital blackjack games use a random number generator or refresh the virtual shoe so frequently that one round gives no useful information about the next. A count cannot develop when the card pool is reset.

The method should not be carried across to unrelated casino games whose results do not use a persistent blackjack shoe.

Live dealer games use physical cards. Counting can still be impractical because several decks may be used and the dealer can shuffle once the cut card is reached. If only a modest part of the shoe is dealt, the count has less time to become informative.

Is counting cards in blackjack illegal in the UK?

UK law does not give a simple answer under the specific phrase card counting. Section 42 of the Gambling Act 2005 makes cheating at gambling an offence, while the Gambling Commission has stated that it has no general policy on the legality of card counting. A suspected case is considered according to its individual facts.

Do not use a phone, app, electronic device or concealed aid to assist with a count. Follow the rules and account terms that apply to the game. An operator may restrict play when activity breaches those terms even if no criminal allegation is made.

Can a blackjack card counter guarantee a profit?

No. Even an accurate blackjack card counter cannot know the next card or guarantee a profitable session. The count is an estimate of the remaining card mix, and short-term results can move sharply in either direction.

Real play also introduces mistakes. A player can lose track of exposed cards, misjudge the decks remaining, use the wrong strategy deviation or continue with a stale count after a shuffle. Table rules and early shuffling may remove any theoretical advantage before these errors are considered.

Raising a wager when the count appears favourable increases the amount that can be lost on the next hand. Set a fixed spending limit and decide how long the session will last before playing. Stop when either limit is reached, and never treat card counting as a way to recover losses or produce regular income.
