Roulette wheel numbers explained
See how many numbers are on European and American roulette wheels, their exact order, colours, total and whether any number is more likely to win.

Roulette wheel numbers explained
A European roulette wheel has 37 pockets. These include numbers 1 through 36 and one green 0. An American wheel has 38 pockets because it adds a green 00.
The numbers are arranged in a fixed sequence around each wheel, but they do not run in numerical order. The layout spreads red and black, odd and even, and high and low numbers around the rim. It also determines which numbers are neighbours when a game offers racetrack or neighbour bets.
Knowing the layout can make the betting interface easier to read. It cannot reveal which number will win the next spin.
How many numbers are on a roulette wheel?
The answer depends on the wheel type.
Roulette wheel | Numbered pockets | Green pockets | Total pockets |
|---|---|---|---|
European | 1 through 36 | 0 | 37 |
French | 1 through 36 | 0 | 37 |
American | 1 through 36 | 0 and 00 | 38 |
French and European roulette use the same standard wheel sequence. Differences between these games usually concern the table layout, terminology or rules such as La Partage rather than the wheel numbers.
Some unusual variants add another green pocket, so the game information is worth checking. The standard European and American formats are the ones covered below.
What is the European roulette wheel number order?
Starting at 0 and reading clockwise, the standard European roulette wheel order is:
- 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, 25, 17, 34, 6, 27, 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10, 5, 24, 16, 33, 1, 20, 14, 31, 9, 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26
The 0 sits between 26 and 32. Because the wheel has an odd number of pockets, no single number is positioned exactly opposite zero. The two pockets nearest the opposite point are 5 and 10.
This order remains the same if the graphic starts at a different point. A wheel may also be shown at a different angle, but the neighbouring numbers do not change.
What is the American roulette wheel number order?
Starting at 0 and reading clockwise, the standard American roulette wheel order is:
- 0, 28, 9, 26, 30, 11, 7, 20, 32, 17, 5, 22, 34, 15, 3, 24, 36, 13, 1, 00, 27, 10, 25, 29, 12, 8, 19, 31, 18, 6, 21, 33, 16, 4, 23, 35, 14, 2
On this wheel, 0 sits between 2 and 28. The 00 pocket is directly opposite 0 and has 1 and 27 as its neighbours.
The American sequence is not the European order with 00 inserted into it. The numbered pockets use a different arrangement across the whole wheel.
Which roulette numbers are red and black?
The colours assigned to numbers 1 through 36 are the same on standard European and American wheels.
Colour | Roulette numbers |
|---|---|
Red | 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, 14, 16, 18, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 30, 32, 34, 36 |
Black | 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11, 13, 15, 17, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 29, 31, 33, 35 |
Green | 0 on a European wheel; 0 and 00 on an American wheel |
There are 18 red numbers and 18 black numbers. Zero is not red or black, so a bet on either colour loses when a green pocket wins under standard rules.
Roulette colours also do not follow a simple odd and even pattern. For instance, 1 is red and 2 is black, but 10 is black and 11 is black as well. Checking the layout is more reliable than trying to infer a colour through the number.
Why are roulette numbers not in numerical order?
The mixed order distributes several types of number around the wheel. Red pockets alternate with black pockets on a standard European wheel, while odd and even values and the lower and higher halves are spread across different sections.
This arrangement stops one area of the rim holding a long numerical run or one broad betting type. It also creates physical groups that are different to the rows and columns printed on the table.
The sequence itself is not what makes an outcome random. A live game relies on the ball and wheel, while a digital game may use a random number generator. In either case, the next result must not be predictable through the printed number order.
Is the wheel order the same as the roulette table layout?
No. The wheel shows numbers in their physical order around the rim. The betting table arranges 1 through 36 in three columns, with zero at one end and 00 added on an American layout.
That distinction matters because the two layouts support different ways of grouping numbers. A split, street or corner bet uses positions on the table grid. A neighbour bet uses adjacent pockets on the wheel.
The racetrack interface in Diamond Roulette, for example, groups wheel neighbours and named wheel sectors. Those groups may look scattered on the main betting grid because they follow the circular sequence instead.
You can see the available formats in our roulette games at Betwright casino. Check the rules inside a particular title before assuming that every wheel-based bet is offered.
What are the most common numbers in roulette?
No number should be inherently more common on a fair roulette wheel. Each individual pocket has the same chance of being selected on a given spin within that wheel format.
A results board may label numbers as hot or cold. That information only describes the spins included in its sample. A number that has appeared several times does not become more likely to appear again, and a number missing for many rounds is not due.
The same principle applies to live casino roulette and computer-generated games. The method used to produce a result differs, but earlier results do not provide a reliable prediction of the next one.
What are the best numbers for roulette?
There is no statistically best roulette number on a fair wheel. A straight-up bet on 17 has the same chance as a straight-up bet on 4, 26 or any other individual pocket.
Players may prefer birthdays, lucky numbers or positions that are easy to find. A number can therefore be popular without being more likely to win. Adding more numbers to a bet increases the amount of wheel coverage, but it also changes the stake or payout attached to that selection. It does not turn one pocket into a stronger choice.
The extra green pocket on an American wheel changes the chance attached to every bet. That is a difference between wheel formats, not evidence that a particular numbered pocket performs better.
What do all roulette numbers add up to?
The numbers 1 through 36 add up to 666. The calculation is:
36 × 37 ÷ 2 = 666
Zero and double zero do not change the total because each has a numerical value of zero. The sum is a piece of roulette trivia rather than a rule, payout or way to forecast a result.
Does memorising the roulette wheel order help?
Memorising every pocket is not necessary for a standard bet. The table and game interface show where a chip can be placed, and the result is settled automatically.
Wheel order becomes useful when reading neighbour bets or a racetrack. If you select a number and one neighbour on each side, for example, the bet covers three consecutive pockets on the wheel rather than three consecutive numbers on the grid. A title such as Mega Roulette 3000 displays wheel-based groups in its racetrack area.
That knowledge helps explain what a bet covers. It does not improve the probability of any pocket, overcome the house edge or identify the next result.
Decide in advance what one session can cost and when it will end. Roulette should stay entertainment, not a way to recover losses or earn money. Safer gambling tools can help when you want firmer controls. Only adults aged 18 or over may gamble.
