What does soft 17 mean in blackjack?

A soft 17 in blackjack is any hand worth 17 that contains an ace counted as 11. Ace and 6 is the simplest example. Ace, 2 and 4 also make soft 17 because the ace can keep its 11-point value without taking the total above 21.

The word soft matters because the hand cannot go bust on the next card. If a high card is drawn, the ace can be revalued at 1. That flexibility affects the player's decision and explains why blackjack tables state a separate rule for a dealer holding soft 17.

How is soft 17 different from hard 17?

Soft 17 and hard 17 have the same total, but the ace is counted differently. A soft total includes an ace valued at 11. A hard total has no ace, or every ace in the hand has to count as 1.

The difference becomes clear when another card is dealt. If ace and 6 receives a 10, the ace drops to 1 and the hand remains on 17. If 10 and 7 receive another card, any card worth 5 or more makes the hand exceed 21.

A soft 17 is not blackjack. A natural blackjack is an ace plus a 10-value card in the opening two-card hand. Ace and 6 is simply a two-card total of 17, so it is settled like any other non-blackjack hand.

Should you hit or stand on a soft 17 blackjack hand?

Common basic-strategy charts tell the player to hit or double soft 17, not stand. The exact action depends on the dealer's upcard and the rules used at the table.

Take a common game that uses several decks, requires the dealer to stand on soft 17 and permits a double after any initial two-card deal. Ace and 6 is usually played as follows.

Doubling commits the hand to one additional card and increases the stake. If the hand contains more than two cards, or the table does not permit the double, hit instead. A game where the dealer hits soft 17 can also change the decision against a dealer 2. Use a strategy chart made for the deck count and table rules rather than treating the table above as universal.

Hitting soft 17 can feel risky because the total already looks close to 21, but the ace protects the hand from an immediate bust. A 4 produces soft 21. A 10 leaves hard 17. A 5 changes the hand to hard 12 because the ace must count as 1.

What happens when the dealer has soft 17?

What do H17 and S17 mean?

S17 means the dealer stands on all totals of 17, including soft 17. H17 means the dealer must hit a soft 17 but still stands on hard 17. In both cases, the dealer continues drawing on totals of 16 or lower unless a variant states a different rule.

Suppose the dealer has ace and 6. Under S17, the hand finishes on 17. Under H17, another card is dealt. A 3 improves the total to soft 20, a 4 makes soft 21 and a 10 changes it to hard 17. The dealer can also finish with a weaker total or go bust after further cards.

The dealer's hole-card procedure is a separate condition. American Blackjack uses a face-down hole card in the opening deal, but that does not tell you if the dealer hits or stands on soft 17. Check both rules independently.

Which soft 17 blackjack rule is better for the player?

All other conditions being equal, S17 is more favourable to the player than H17. Making the dealer draw on soft 17 creates some additional busts, but it also gives the dealer more chances to improve a relatively weak 17. Across many hands, that second effect is larger and increases the house edge under H17.

The difference does not make an individual result predictable. A dealer required to hit soft 17 can draw a 10 and remain on 17, improve to 18 or more, or eventually go bust. The rule changes the long-term probabilities, not the outcome waiting in the shoe.

Where can you check the dealer's soft 17 rule?

Look in the game's information or rules panel before placing a wager. Useful wording includes “dealer stands on all 17s”, “dealer stands on soft 17” or “dealer hits soft 17”. An H17 or S17 label may appear beside the deck count, blackjack payout and permitted player actions.
